PMNewberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says that on Thursday, October 2. Newberry High School secured and safely removed a firearm that was brought to the school by a student. Sheriff Foster said that the weapon was located in the students backpack and was not displayed and no threats were made to anyone with the weapon. Community Meeting Provides Feedback To Police October 2. PMMembers of the community gathered together last Thursday at West End Baptist Church to provide feedback to the Newberry Police Department on how they could better work together. The meeting is part of a new initiative of quarterly community meetings held by the police department to gather thoughts from different parts of the community on what theyre seeing in their neighborhoods. Im here to gather feedback as to what were police department doing, what youd like to see us doing and how we can partner together to make this community a better place, said Police Chief Roy Mc. Clurkin pictured. Mc. Clurkin said he felt that as a department they had done a lot lately through community policing and made a positive impact in the West End area as well as other areas because of community meetings and discussions that have come out of those meetings. Community policing in Newberry is not just a buzz word but a way our officers feel they can bring about more positive interactions within their communities, said City Manager Matt De. Witt. It is important that all of our citizens feel safe and protected and in a city the size of Newberry there is no reason why you shouldnt know your officers by name. De. Witt said these community meetings were a great way to help make these introductions and he was proud of the efforts made by both the officers and community members to help foster this positive relationship. Community members expressed concerns Thursday of drivers speeding on roads that got a lot of foot traffic and that they would like to see more community meetings to talk about the future of the West End area to bring about positive change. Many comments towards the police department Thursday were thankful for their presence in the West End area and that if someone had needed assistance, that the department had been there almost instantly to help. Mc. Clurkin thanked the community members in attendance and said that because of these meetings, the police department had received more calls with tips and concerns which helps make their jobs easier and allows them to better help the community. Citizens have been great in calling me when they see something going on or when they feel something might happen and thats what I need, Mc. Clurkin said. When they identify a problem, they help us correct that problem. The community was invited to attend the police departments Bibles and Badges program that meets on the first Thursday of every month at 6 p. Mc. Clurkin said the community had been very receptive and ministers throughout the city and county are helping to put on the bible study each month. Were going to continue to do what we do, but we want the community to have some stake in it, Mc. Clurkin said. This technology was recently used to guide a deputy to a lost hiker using the AVL from the car and the GPS for the cal lers cell phone. Sheriff Foster also said that these devices will also be a great safety feature for the deputies because if the deputy calls for help or has other issues, the 9. In addition to the AVL feature, the cars has also been equipped with wireless connectivity back to the Sheriffs Office. This means that the deputies are now able to perform their own drivers license, tag, and wanted person checks from the field. Sheriff Foster said that this access will help cut down radio traffic and work in an already overloaded 9. Sheriff Foster said that the use of this technology will give the deputies more than just a better response time, but will give the deputies have more time to patrol throughout the county. Because a visible patrol is one of the greatest deterrents to crime, this will be a valuable tool to all of Newberry County as the deputies will have more time to be in the field. The system allows staff to review most all aspects of a vehicles operations such as speed, areas patrolled, and other vital information to better deploy patrols based upon call volume and current crime trends.
